Class Descriptions
Hatha Yoga
This is an alignment-based practice that promotes strength, balance and flexibility in a safe, no-flow setting. Props are used, where appropriate, to help each student experience the benefits of each posture without injury. Yoga philosophy is woven into and through each class, as we explore (with humor and love) how yoga principles apply to each of us, and how we can be helped and healed through practice.
Chair Yoga
Chairs can be used creatively and many people are surprised at how deeply they are able to experience and access the postures by using the chair. For those who have difficulty getting up and down from the floor, or those who have injuries or physical limitations, chair yoga is a great way to receive the full benefits of a yoga practice. And experienced yoga practitioners can use the chair for inversions and backbends in ways that challenge and expand their physical and energetic horizons.
Gentle Yoga
For Cancer Patients/Survivors
We stretch, strengthen, breathe, and move consciously and with love. Modifications and the use of props enable all to participate, no matter his or her physical condition. Each class includes a few minutes of poetry reading or yoga philosophy and discussion. My experience of teaching this class over the years has transformed me as much as or more than the students have been transformed.
Restorative Yoga
Although any type of yoga practice can help us manage stress, a restorative yoga practice is especially effective. When we give ourselves the time and space to consciously relax and breathe, our body begins to unclench, our energy can flow freely, and we start to cultivate a sense that “all is well.” In this deeply restful practice, the poses are set up using lots of props so that the body feels held and supported, enabling one to stay in the pose for several minutes, relaxing deeper and deeper over time. Pranayama (breathing exercises) are often incorporated into this practice, providing powerful healing for body, mind and spirit.
